We are excited to invite you to the Nitrogen Management Workshop at the beautiful Elephant Island Winery on September 12, 2024. This event, hosted by Carl Withler PAg in collaboration with Elephant Island Winery, features expert speakers, hands-on demonstrations, and networking opportunities. The day begins with a warm welcome and refreshments, followed by brief introductions and an outline of the day's activities. Scott Smith, PAg will start the presentations with a discussion on soil development and nitrogen management. After a coffee break, Miranda Halladay will provide insights into the history and management of Elephant Island Winery, followed by Chris Mark presenting innovative strategies for nitrogen management in orchards and vineyards.

Following a catered lunch, Chris will lead a session on soil sampling techniques and current projects at the winery. In the afternoon, Miranda Halladay will showcase her impressive on-site compost pile and discuss its benefits and management techniques. Rickard Bambry will then present the latest nitrogen precision equipment and their applications. The day will conclude with a wrap-up session, general discussion, and a relaxing social time with wine tasting, providing attendees with an excellent opportunity to discuss the workshop with its presenters and network.

  1. 09:45-10:30 Where is nitrogen in soil, how is it held/where did it come from (valley wide and then site specific to Elephant Island)? – Scott Smith (note: Scott must leave at 11:30 for Kelowna so, all questions before that)

  1. 10:30-10:45 Coffee/networking time

  1. 10:45-12:00 Vintality work in the valley and nitrogen management generally-Chris Mark (who is Vintality, where do they operate, what projects do they have in the valley?)

  1. 12:00-13:15 Lunch – Ashoka Indian delivered to site. )Gluten free/vegetarian available) (Delivered to site at 11:30)

  1. 13:15-14:30 The details of work at Elephant Island (review old soil pit locations)- Chris Mark/Miranda/Del

  1. 14:30-15:00 Elephant Island overview and the compost I have learned to love- Miranda Halladay

  1. 15:00-15:15 Coffee

  1. 15:15-16:00 Nitrogen application equipment and cool precision toys- Rickard Bambry (there will be green equipment available to stand near/talk about)

  1. 16:00-18:00 Wine sampling/networking……..call it a good day.

09:45 AM – Understanding Nitrogen in Soil – Its Origin, Retention, and Distribution (Valley-wide and Site-specific to Elephant Island) – Scott Smith

10:30 AM – Coffee Break and Discussion
A short break with an opportunity for discussions. Miranda Halladay will provide a brief history and management overview of Elephant Island Winery.

11:00 AM – Vintality's Work in the Valley and Nitrogen Management Overview – Chris Mark (An introduction to Vintality, their areas of operation, and key projects in the valley)

12:00 PM – Lunch – Ashoka Indian Cuisine (Gluten-free and vegetarian options available).

01:15 PM – Review of work details at Elephant Island, including an overview of old soil pit locations - Chris, Miranda, and Del.

2:30 PM – Compost Management
Miranda will showcase her impressive on-site compost pile and discuss its benefits and management techniques.

03:00 PM – Coffee and General Discussion

03:15 PM – Equipment Dealer Presentation with Rickard Bambry
An equipment dealer will present the latest in nitrogen precision equipment and their applications.

04:00 PM - 06:00 PM – Questions, networking and Wine Tasting
Conclude the day by allowing the participants to discuss the workshop with its presenters, network with each other, and a complimentary wine tasting.

Carl Withler, PAg, dedicated his early years with the BC government to high field-based work. He began his career as a summer student with the Ministry of Agriculture in 1984. After graduating in 1988, he earned his designation as a Professional Agrologist through articling and gaining hands-on experience in the field.
