A click here, a snap there, and voila, you have a photo masterpiece!

If only soil health was as easy to fix as taking a picture, right?

Well, while we're hard at work getting our hands dirty for healthier soil, we figured, why not also have some fun and inspire others along the way? Here at the Compost Council of Canada we’re as committed to soil health as earthworms are to compost! And we're excited to announce an exciting initiative - the "Snap Soil Salvation" project.

The Mission

We're on a quest to gather an exquisite collection of photographs that put the spotlight on healthy soil practices. But not just any practices - we're focusing on the "6 Cs of Soil Health":

1. Control Compaction

2. Cultivate Carefully

3. Continuous Living Plants

4. Cover the Soil Constantly

5. Crop, Plant and Animal Diversity

6. Compost and Other Soil Improvers

So, we're calling out to all photographers, gardeners, landscapers, farmers, nature enthusiasts - anyone with a camera and a love for soil - to submit photographs showcasing these 6 C practices in action … helping to explain and showcase these practices in the field, in the garden, everywhere they are being put into practice to help our soils get healthier and, in turn, help tackle climate change.

Think of this as your chance to be the “paparazzi” of soil health, capturing every important moment of soil's journey towards health and vitality. By participating, not only will you help spread awareness about soil health, but you'll also contribute to an inspirational library of pictures that will be “worth a thousand words”.

Snap and Win!

With every photo entry you submit before August 31, 2023, you not only contribute to a great cause, but also earn a ballot for a chance to win one of 10 annual digital subscriptions to Harrowsmith – the great inspirational magazine for those who love to make, grow, sustain and share. AND- all entries submitted by July 31, 2023 will receive a bonus ballot for each photo submission. So why wait? Get your camera clicking and ballots stacking!

Each photo you snap and share helps raise awareness about soil health, helping inspiring more individuals and communities to take better care of this valuable resource. So regardless of the draw outcomes, all participants will receive a Soil Steward certificate as a token of our gratitude. This certificate recognizes your valuable contributions to this project promoting soil health, marking you as an integral part of our “ground force” for a greener world.

To Participate

While we're not asking you to “dig deep” for Pulitzer-prize winning shots, we'd love to see your creativity blossom. Soil and compost may not be your regular 'hot' models, but trust us, they can be just as captivating.

To participate, please send your high-resolution photographs (up to 5 in each category) to jim@compost.org by August 31, 2023. Each image should be clearly labelled with the category it belongs to and include a short description about the healthy soil practice depicted. (You can find full Submission Rules and Guidelines here.) To download the PDF of this document click HERE.

Remember, your photo could be the seed that sprouts into a tree of awareness and inspiration for others. So, “compose your compost”, “cultivate your clicks” and let's make this initiative a “soil-ful” success!

Happy soil snapping!
