Dr. Maria Strack will deliver a presentation called “Peatlands as natural climate solutions: From global potential to local action” on Wednesday, November 20th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at KPU’s Richmond campus.
Professor Strack is a Canada Research Chair at the University of Waterloo. Her research investigates interactions between ecology, hydrology, biogeochemistry and soil properties in wetland ecosystems. She focuses on feedbacks between wetlands and climate by investigating controls on peatland greenhouse gas exchange in natural, disturbed and restored ecosystems.
Most of Richmond’s agricultural land is peatland. Agriculture is also practiced on peatlands in Delta, Surrey, New Westminster, Pitt Meadows, and Langley. Agrologists in our region will benefit from learning about the climate implications of peatland management.
