Call for Registrant Board Member Nominations: Regional Electoral District 1 (Cariboo Central Interior, Kootenay Boundary, and Peace River Branches, and Registrants at Large). One (1) Board position is available.

BCIA is now welcoming nominations for election to a three-year position as a Registrant Board Member for Regional Electoral District 1. After the election, this position will immediately commence at the conclusion of the 2024 BCIA Annual General Meeting set for May 8, 2024 and continue for a three (3) year term thereafter.

Nominations will be accepted from Monday, January 8, 2024, to Friday, February 9, 2024, 11:59 pm Pacific time at nominations@bcia.com.

About the Board of BCIA

The Board is responsible for governing the strategic and professional direction of BCIA, under the Agrologists Regulation and the associated Professional Governance Act [SBC.2018 Ch.49].

The Board of the BCIA consists of the following:

  • seven (7) elected voting Registrant Board Members, including the Chair and Vice Chair
  • four (4) Lay voting Board Members appointed by the Cabinet of British Columbia
  • the immediate Past Chair as a non-voting Board Member.

The Board has oversight of BCIA's activities, budget, and organizational compliance. Board members are entrusted to protect the public interest in British Columbia's natural and environmental resources and to direct the organization's activities in that public interest rather than in their own interest or that of any specific group, Regional Electoral District or Branch. BCIA operates in accordance with a policy governance model, with all operational decisions made by the CEO and staff in accordance with the annual budget and parameters as approved by the Board.

Since Feb 5, 2021 when the profession was included under the Professional Governance Act, the Board has adopted an election process whereby seven (7) Registrant Board Members are elected via online voting.

The seven (7) Registrant Board Members are composed of:

  • Two (2) Registrant Board Members from District 1 (Cariboo Central Interior, Kootenay Boundary, and Peace River Branches, and Registrants at Large);
  • Two (2) Registrant Board Members from District 2 (Fraser Valley, Kamloops, and Okanagan Branches); and
  • Three (3) Registrant Board Members from District 3 (Vancouver and Victoria & Islands Branches)

Eligibility

Nominees must be BCIA Registrants in good standing (other than student registrants or honorary agrologists) from District 1 (Cariboo Central Interior, Kootenay Boundary, and Peace River Branches, and Registrants at Large) and can hold any of the 5 professional designations regulated by BCIA. They should have experience in vision and goal setting, problem-solving, relationship-building, policy governance, and organizational leadership.

Experience and Qualifications

While previous experience as a Board Member is not required, it is essential that candidates understand the roles and responsibilities of a member of the Board and have the necessary knowledge and demonstrated skills to enable them to contribute to the Board’s decision-making processes and oversight. BCIA's commitment to good governance includes an onboarding session for new registrant members.

Personal Attributes

All nominees should possess the following personal attributes:

  • high ethical standards and integrity in professional and personal dealings
  • appreciation of the responsibilities to the public
  • be able and willing to raise potentially controversial issues in a manner that encourages dialogue
  • be flexible, responsive and willing to consider others' opinions
  • be capable of a broad perspective on issues
  • be knowledgeable regarding current and emerging issues affecting BCIA and the natural resource sector

If the Nomination Committee confirms more than one nominee as a candidate, an election will be held in accordance with the BCIA's online voting system from 12:00 pm Wednesday, March 13, 2024, and will be extended to Friday, April 12, 2024 11:59 pm Pacific time as per Bylaw 43. If the Nomination Committee validates only one candidate, that candidate will be deemed acclaimed into the vacant position and no election will be held.

If an election is required, voting instructions will be provided to all eligible voters in District 1 together with the list of candidates by Wednesday, March 6, 2024.

Additional Information

Elected Board Members are expected to make themselves available to fulfill Board responsibilities, including the requirement to meet a minimum of four to eight times annually, by audio or video conference calls, or at physical meetings at locations to be determined.

Elected members of the Board are entitled to claim 10 PD hours in their annual PD Report plus are reimbursed for expenses based on current BCIA travel rates (PDF); otherwise, this is a volunteer position.
